Embracing Change: Relocating from Northland to the Manawatu
Life is a journey filled with twists and turns, and sometimes, we find ourselves at a crossroads, faced with a decision that will shape our future. For me, that decision came in the form of relocating from the picturesque town of Kerikeri in Northland to my hometown of Palmerston North. I’ll try to share the reasoning behind my decision, reflect on the highlights of Kerikeri, and explore the opportunities awaiting me in and around Palmerston North (PALMY).
Why I Decided to Relocate
Relocating from Kerikeri wasn’t a decision I took lightly. After 2.5 years in Northland, it holds a special place in my heart, with its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and warm community spirit. However, as much as I loved Kerikeri, I felt a pull to return to my roots in Palmerston North.
- Connection with Roots: Palmerston North has always been home for me, where I have fond memories of childhood adventures and family gatherings. Returning here feels like reconnecting with a part of myself that I had left behind.
- Regrouping and Reflecting: After spending time in Kerikeri, I felt the need to regroup and reflect on my professional and personal goals. Palmerston North provides a familiar and supportive environment where I can take stock of my life and chart the course for the next chapter.
- Proximity to Wellington: Palmerston North’s close proximity to our capital city opens up exciting opportunities for connecting with friends and obviously career advancement and networking. With Wellington being a hub of innovation, concerts and creativity, I look forward to exploring potential collaborations and fun adventures in the future.
Highlights of Kerikeri/Northland
Before bidding farewell to Kerikeri, let’s take a moment to appreciate some of the highlights of this charming town:
- Historic Stone Store: As New Zealand’s oldest stone building, the Stone Store is a testament to Kerikeri’s rich history and heritage.
- Rainbow Falls: Nature lovers can’t miss a visit to Rainbow Falls, where the sight of cascading water amidst lush greenery is simply breathtaking.
- Kerikeri Farmers’ Market: A vibrant hub of local produce and artisanal goods, the Kerikeri Farmers’ Market is a must-visit for foodies and culture enthusiasts alike.
- Te Waimate Mission House: Delve into the past at Te Waimate Mission House, a historic site that offers insights into early European settlement in New Zealand.
- Ngawha Springs – a geothermal hot pool complex consisting of 16 mineral baths each with unique nutrient and temperature characteristics used for centuries for relaxation as well as their therapeutic qualities and healing properties.
Embracing Change and Moving Forward: While the decision to relocate comes with its challenges, I’m excited about the possibilities that await me in Palmerston North. However, it’s important to acknowledge the bittersweet aspect of this transition – the loss of connection with new life-long friends, the close location to Aotearoa’s pristine beaches & native bush, and leaving an exclusive selection of tasty craft beers in Kerikeri.
Finding Balance: As I embark on this new chapter, I’m mindful of striking a balance between embracing change and honoring the past. While I may be physically distant from loved ones in Kerikeri, their support and memories will always remain close to my heart.
Time to Establish: Establishing myself in a new market will undoubtedly take time and effort. Building connections, gaining local insights, and adapting to the unique dynamics of Palmerston North will be essential steps in this journey.
Forward Momentum: Relocating to Palmerston North isn’t a step backward; rather, it’s a conscious choice to reconnect with my roots and create a solid foundation for the future. Whatever the next professional and personal step may be, I’m committed to approaching it with optimism and resilience.
Moving Forward with Purpose
As I settle into “the comfortable shoe” of life back in Palmerston North, I’m filled with a sense of purpose and anticipation for new challenges that lie ahead. With each new day, I’m reminded of the opportunities for growth, exploration, and connection that await me in this vibrant city.
If you’re considering a similar move or navigating a period of transition in your own life, I encourage you to embrace change with an open heart and a willingness to embrace the unknown, or to connect with good friends/family. Life’s journey is full of surprises, and sometimes, the greatest adventures begin with a single step.
